This week we enjoyed Florida's 'winter' weather and had an outdoor service while continuing our Advent series on the concept of gifts. We considered how the gift can become limited by entering into an economic world, and how this understanding of the limited gift shapes our experience of Advent.
With our Advent focus on the pure gift, and unconditional acts of mercy, we moved this week into the tension of Mary and Martha, of being and doing. We explored this story which poses a question about the better way, turned the standard reading in on itself, and refused to choose one or the other, instead, embracing the unresolved third way.
The Collective Community Christmas Party was a great success this year! Thank you to Cafe DaVinci for allowing us to host at an incredible local venue. Also, a huge thanks to our musicians for spending the night entertaining us from the stage. Our next holiday event will be held at Chess Park December 17th at 6:00PM. Join us at Candlelight!
One of Collective's own, Anthony DeFeo, wrote this blog article about the importance of The Neighborhood Center in Deland and how we can all help this year by bringing food to Collective's Candlelight Service, where a food drive will be held.
This week we continued our Advent exploration of the unconditional. From last week's look at unconditional gifts, we looked this week at unconditional acts of mercy. We entered into the tension of all of the good done in the name of religion, and the propensity religion has to get in its own way, drawing acts of mercy into systems of mercenary economic rewards. Mic The Prophet sat in for the house band, and the Christmas party immediately followed our shorter service!
Collective is holding its annual Christmas Party at Cafe DaVinci this year! The Christmas Party is open to all, and will be free to the public. Make sure to wear something extra hideous to compete in our extremely competitive Ugly Sweater Contest. Winners and Prizes will be announced at the event. Collective will provide holiday desserts and live music. Performances feature: The Stags and Mic The Prophet (Winter Tour). All are welcome. See you there!
This week we began our season of intention and preparation, readying ourselves for the celebration of all that Christmas means. We began this season, so often eclipsed by and consumed with the culture of gifts, by exploring the nature of gift giving. At a deeper level, beyond questions of spending and simplicity, we opened ourselves to the unresolvable paradox of gift, and found in this tension one of the ways in which God is born in the world.
We are a misfit faith community that gathers in DeLand on Sundays at 5pm. Come as you are.
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
