“When you know better, you do better.” - Maya Angelou
Issues ranging from the treatment of mental illness, to roles within organizations, to LGBTQ+ discussion and inclusion are prevalent within the church today. We have not handled differences between people well, but in the name of progress we must make an effort.
We shift the focus to women in the coming season to emphasize the importance of women’s roles in the church and the world. However, in many ways we also fail to break away from the patriarchal tradition. The exclusion of anyone is a problem that requires everyone’s action and must be solved internally.
Topics such as transgender individuals, homosexuality, and bisexuality have historically been divisive. For such complex discussion it is crucial that we accept the tension it creates while suspending the division to welcome all. To make a continual effort to name the fiction of gender roles and to expand our inclusion to all people as part of our liturgy, we need to be the ones to raise our voices for those who have not been valued.
Have we come far from where we started? Yes. Is there still much work to be done? Yes. Can we ever stop pushing further? No.
We are a misfit faith community that gathers in DeLand on Sundays at 5pm. Come as you are.
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
