Can the living be raised to life? Can we have the fullness of life’s experience as human beings? And what does it mean to be “vitally alive?”
Faith is a way of life. It is not just agreeing on a series of events that happened a few thousand years ago. The story serves as a signpost on the way of life. It would be ridiculous to climb the signpost rather than following to road that it points to.
Letting the story point past itself allows it to ask much more life giving questions.
“What does it mean for us to live unafraid of death?” “What does it mean to love other people, even those most difficult to love?” And more that eventually get Jesus killed. What if the kingdom of God is not a fantastic life after death? What if it is the refusal to stop asking these questions to find the way of love is the kingdom of God? Love goes on in us.
No mention is made of the afterlife by Jesus after the resurrection occurs in the Bible. Emphasis is placed on this world and this life. “If this life of love is stronger than death, why would we not live now, the kind of lives that will go on in God’s good world forever?” The question is not whether or not God can raise the dead. Is there still a call that can raise even the living to life? Today, we affirm that the answer is yes.
We are a misfit faith community that gathers in DeLand on Sundays at 5pm. Come as you are.
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
