In the time of the writing of 1 John, the early Church was in disagreement. These people were laying down the foundations of Christianity. They were to decide what that truly meant for themselves and for future generations. Understandably, this was not a simple process, and disharmony was inevitable.
1 John emphasizes not an agreement on beliefs and values, but rather an agreement on the experience of Christ. Jesus was revolutionary; he considered the old Jewish laws and decided that more important than strictly following these laws was to live a life of love. Many times, 1 John repeats “you know the truth.” It is not a matter of believing, but of experiencing and knowing what it is like to live a life of radical love for others. In this way, we know God, and thus do not need to hold the same theological beliefs.
Scientists hold no allegiance to facts. Their allegiance is to finding truth using experimental methods. If their experimental methods disagree with a previously accepted fact, they do not question their method, they question the facts. The entire job of a scientist is to question everything and test everything. In the same way, Christianity was and is an experiment dedicated not to a set of laws claiming to be of love and truth, but to the actual pursuit of love and truth.
We are a misfit faith community that gathers in DeLand on Sundays at 5pm. Come as you are.
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
