Straight out of the Swamp and with two shiny new degrees from the University of Florida, Erin Wagner is very excited to take her first post-grad steps as the Pastoral Resident at Collective this summer. Erin will be working closely with Ben, Caitlin, and Jess in Sunday worship, community groups, and summer events. With her leadership experience in the Pride Student Union, Pride Mentor Program, and The Mix: Faith and Sexuality at UF, Erin is also looking forward to joining and contributing to the program of Collective Cares during her time with us.
Erin is originally from Louisiana but has called DeLand her home since middle school, when she became an active member of FUMC DeLand across the street. Continuously seeking and creating accepting, engaging communities, Erin joined the Gator Wesley Foundation campus ministry as a freshman and has since served on their staff for two years, coordinating events, writing curriculum, leading worship, and creating intentionally open spaces for honesty and dialogue in places where students have traditionally felt silenced or marginalized. Her passion for justice work was especially highlighted in Erin’s time at Branches, Inc. in Florida City, Florida, where she worked with children and families of immigrant and low SES communities as the coordinator of their summer programming.
Erin has recently obtained degrees in visual arts and psychology, and in the fall she will be far from home at Boston University to pursue her masters in divinity and social work. Before she leaves, you can find her out on the beach or any place you can get some Florida sun, catching up on her latest podcast obsession, or working on her newest art project. Though her time at Collective will be short, she learned from Branches that it’s not how long, but rather how deep you are a part of a community, and she can’t wait join the Collective team.
We are a misfit faith community that gathers in DeLand on Sundays at 5pm. Come as you are.
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
