One of the new summer interns, Elizabeth Hutchison, plans to use their passion for LGBT+ literature and more specifically, coming-out narratives, to bring new ideas to the Collective blog and community. Elizabeth Hutchison graduated from Stetson University this past semester of spring 2016, with a degree in English and Religious Studies. They plan to stay in DeLand for the summer to work with Collective Students and possibly Collective Cares, all while doing the layout for an online journal.
Elizabeth is originally from Panama City, Florida, and enjoys reading outside in their free time. Right now, Elizabeth is reading The Prince of Los Cocuyos, an autobiography by Richard Blanco which explores the idea of owning one’s identity, gender and sexuality, and religion and oppression. Elizabeth also enjoys listening to and restoring records, baking cupcakes, and playing musical instruments.
This coming fall 2016 semester, Elizabeth will begin their degree in Literary, Cultural, and Textual Studies at the University of Central Florida, where they have an assistantship with the English department. Elizabeth hopes to bring some of their experiences from this summer into their writing and studies in the future.
We are a misfit faith community that gathers in DeLand on Sundays at 5pm. Come as you are.
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
