“It takes 40 days to get the people out of Egypt, but it takes 40 years
to get Egypt out of the people.”
“Maybe the thing that you need to be courageous in is
changing your desire to change.”
“We can’t create what we haven’t see, but we can imagine
what we have seen being different”
This is the flag that hangs outside my church. It has also been about six or seven years since I’ve called a church “my church”. I left the last one feeling so sure I’d gotten the whole thing wrong. That what I’d experienced was some joke; that these houses of the lord were just jail cells of hypocrisy. I’d heard of Collective, as one hears of things in a small close knit downtown like DeLand and Stetson. Through my time at Trilogy, I met more and more of the members. Intrigued by their ideals, LGBTQ acceptance, and a personal need to keep branching out into the DeLand community, I went for the first time over summer.
Anabel shares how Collective's support for her trips to the DR have empowered her to serve, to reconnect to her roots, and educate her students in compassion, social justice, and global citizenship.
Kaleen shares how her work as a nurse practitioner and midwife in Haiti has inspired her, how Collective has supported her by making space, and how we'll be able to further fund her efforts in the coming year through the 2018 pledge drive.
Ben offers the update on the pledge drive and spells out how Collective gives back, not through branded projects that we own, but by empowering, resourcing and celebrating what is already being done by the passionate people within our community.
I am currently writing to you from Trilogy Coffee. I am surrounded by warm brews on a cold day, familiar faces in the community, a staff that I know and love, and I can’t help but think about how I wouldn’t be here, in this place with these people, if it weren’t for Collective.
We are a misfit faith community that gathers in DeLand on Sundays at 5pm. Come as you are.
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
