This Super Bowl Sunday sermon was characterized by discussion. Ben barely wrote a sermon, but instead opened up a congregational discussion about the role of experience in our spirituality. The reading we looked at was Acts 2, where people from all over the world, all of whom spoke different languages, came together and had an experience of the Holy Spirit which allowed for them to communicate freely between one another. Contextually, we contrasted this story to the story of Babble, where the people of the world came together to attempt to build a temple to God, and in turn God punished them by toppling the tower and scattering them across the Earth, cursing them to speak different languages. In this story, the opposite occurred. People come together in celebration, shared in a spiritual experience which invited them to communicate and go forth to do the work Jesus set out to do before died.
We talked about how our experiences shape our spirituality. We challenged ourselves, again, to come together and listen to one another because we believe it is within the shared stories of our experiences we can begin to paint the picture of the unconditional. |

Come as you are. Sundays at 5pm
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
