During this Sunday service Dr. Kandy Queen Sutherland told us the story of Esther to try to answer the question, what women want. She points out that four times in the scroll of Esther, She is asked by the King what she wants. He tells her that she can have up to half of his kingdom and all the riches she could imagine but Esther’s request are never of riches. Her people are hated and in danger as Hamon wishes to rid Persia of the Jewish population. Esther is called upon to save her people and stop Hamon from carrying out this unjust plan of genocide.
Dr. Sutherland points out that this is not history but it is a biblical story of human agency and what can happen when power goes unchecked and injustice runs rampant throughout the country. It is a story of an unlikely female hero who is fighting for her people.
In the end it is revealed that all that Esther truly wants is to live a peaceful and fearless life where justice prevails for all people. The story of Esther shows us that to live peaceful and fearless lives is not only what women want but what all people want. Mordecai and the rest of the Jewish population, men and women, wish to live in peace away from hatred and want to live life without fear in hopes that justice will always prevail. |

Sundays at 5pm. Come as you are. All are welcome.
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
