If we are not careful, Christianity can seem much like a religion of condemnation. This was not, however, Jesus’s message. Jesus’s message was one of forgiveness and encouragement. Jesus empowered humanity to find life within ourselves and to bring each other up to our strong potential.
We often think of forgiveness in the terms that Christ’s death was payment for our sins. However, this is not how the true nature of forgiveness works. Forgiveness requires no debts to be paid. Rather, it frees us from being trapped in the past. Through forgiveness, though we still must face the consequences of our actions, we are able to have a future. Forgiveness permits hope.
In order to move towards this hope, we must acknowledge the power of encouragement. Encouragement is a reminder that we contain within us the power of God and the power of the universe. Though we feel weak and have moments in which we are not at our best or not even at any good point at all, we need to be able to recover from those moments and keep moving forward. A key component of strong community is to support each other through affirmation. Through this affirmation, people can start to recognize the strength within themselves, that which they may have previously believed to be absent.
We are a misfit faith community that gathers in DeLand on Sundays at 5pm. Come as you are.
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
