Knowledge & News
Thought provoking topics and series, necessary news and information.
This week we explored an unfamiliar story. Far from Primary in the biblical narrative, this we experienced a foreign tale from a foreign source. We did, however, encounter a familiar character. We finished our time with Daniel in one of the most thrilling and intriguing adventures to date. It offered us opportunity for critique and reflection, thoughtful conversation and introspection.
We took on the less known apocryphal tale of Bel & the Dragon. We read the tale together, and worked in small groups to analyze the texts and determine our own interpretations of what the purpose of the story is. We also discussed the idea of consumption versus action which is seen over and over again in this story. In the story, Bel is believed to be alive because he consumes. We live in a culture that holds the attitude that we are the sum of the things we consume. We considered that this story may be a critique of the idea that we can reduce people to what they consume. We also discussed the consumption of beliefs, and the "observable soul". We cannot see into your mind and discover what you believe. We can only see what you claim to believe and what you do. We are not alive simply because we consume ideas, and the point of our faith community is not just to consume beliefs, ideas, or theology. The point is to change the way that we interact, and be in the world. We discussed the value of taking action, and changing the way we live rather than simply consuming.

We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
