Our family comes from a fairly traditional Christian background. Natasha was raised Roman Catholic by a Mom who nearly became a nun in Mexico City 45 years ago. Her Dad, on the other hand, is an atheist. As for me, my Mom is a church organist, so we usually attended wherever she was working at the time. We switched mostly between Methodist and Southern Baptist. Meanwhile, my Dad and step-Mom were regular Episcopalians. As a high school student, I always felt most comfortable in Younglife, where I had a strong group of friends and felt able to have meaningful conversation about how religion was relevant in our daily lives. As parents ourselves, Natasha and I wanted to make sure our kids had a strong foundation of faith, but never found a real home or community until we started attending FUMC several years ago. Collective launched after we had been there for a few years and we were drawn fairly quickly to the openness and acceptance of the new community. The Community Statement really struck a chord with both of us and encapsulated the type of faith or religious tradition we wanted our family to be based in. Now, I am grateful to say that we count the members of the Collective community among our closest friends. Beyond that, the same can be said for our kids, who have found at Collective a community that embraces and encourages their individual spiritual journeys in more ways than we ever could have hoped. "We support Collective because we appreciate good conversations. We appreciate the acceptance of different backgrounds and perspectives." We support Collective because we appreciate good conversations. We appreciate the acceptance of different backgrounds and perspectives. We support the overall willingness of the Collective community to try and understand one another without preconceived context or prescribed assumptions. We support Collective because we believe the message of Jesus is truly intended for all humanity and that love and grace are really the essence of life. PS - Mobile giving is easy! Sundays at 5pm. Come as you are. All are welcome.
We value highly the metaphor of journey. We’re different people from different places and backgrounds, representing an intergenerational community, and we’ve traveled different paths. So, we agree not to make assumptions about the person across from us, next to us, or in conversation with us. We challenge ourselves to be sensitive, knowing this community includes a diverse group of people from life-long followers of Jesus, to people who are just now open to the idea that God might exist. We strive to avoid offense, ask good questions, articulate and explain our responses. We don’t assume fluency in bible, spirituality, or Church language, because we believe the message of Jesus is not for Christianity, but for humanity. So, we do everything in the spirit of love and grace.
